Section 1 – Youth Participation Contest

Rules for Entering and Scoring

1. The contest is open to any boy or girl between and including the ages of 12 and 18 who is residing in the Solanco School District.

2. The rules and regulations listed in the Premium Book of the Southern Lancaster County Community Fair shall apply.

3. All entries must be good quality and completely acceptable by the department chairman or members of that committee.

4. Entries other than livestock may not be purchased for showing.

5. Each entry must be locally grown, selected, and/or prepared by the exhibitor.

6. All livestock prizes selected MUST BE EXHIBITED at the following year’s fair.

7. The following entry points will be given for entering exhibits in the various departments.

8. In all departments, the following points will be given for placing:

A. 1st place........................................................................................... 10 points

E. 5th place........................................................................................... 2 points

9. A contestant’s total points will be the total of entry plus placing points.

10. Awards will be made Friday evening at 5:45 PM, before the Market Livestock Sale in the show ring.

11. The top 11 finalists will be posted in the fair office on Friday afternoon.

12. All winners or parent representative MUST BE PRESENT during the awards presentation or they will forfeit their prize.

13. The first place winner from last year is not eligible to compete in this year’s contest, but may compete next year.

14. All previous first place winners, as long as they meet the age requirements and with the exception of item #13 above are eligible to compete in this contest.

PRIZES

The following prizes will be awarded to the youth having the highest score in the Participation Contest. The high individual will have choice of awards and will continue in succession until all prizes have been awarded.

1. $200 toward purchase of feeder steer, contributed by Farmer’s First Bank, Quarryville Branch.

2. $300 towards purchase of registered heifer calf, contributed by Fair Association.

3. $200 towards trip to National FFA Convention, contributed by Weaver Insurance Agency, Inc.

4. $100 towards purchase of feeder pigs, contributed by Solanco FFA.

5. $100 towards purchase of market lambs, contributed by Coldwell Banker Homesale Services Group.

6. $100 towards purchase of show equipment, contributed by Coldwell Banker Homesale Services Group.

7. $25 cash award, contributed by Empty Pockets Farm.

8. Cedar Chest, contributed by Fair Association.

9. Portable Sewing Machine, contributed in honor of Edna Groff, by the Groff family.

10. Portable CD Player, contributed by Fair Association.

11. DVD Player, contributed by Fair Association.

RULES

1. FFA and 4-H, See Department 10 for eligibility and premiums.

2. The contest will consist of an operator examination and a tractor driving and equipment handling course.

3. Contestants will be scored on a fault points system. The contestant with the lowest score wins.

4. Tractor driving contest rules approved by the Pennsylvania State University will be followed.

Section 3 – Solanco FFA Pumpkin Judging

COMMITTEE

1. The contest is open to students who will be in grades K-2 in one of the four elementary schools in the Solanco School District in September 2007.

2. All pumpkins must be entered on Tuesday, September 18, 2007 in the Crops Barn on the fairgrounds between 4 – 10 PM.

3. There will be one entry category, best decorated. Again, this should be the students work. Evidence of parental help will be noted and the entry will receive a lower rating.

4. There will be someone from the Solanco FFA in the Crops Barn who will take the entry.

5. The pumpkins will become part of the total fair and must remain on exhibit throughout the 3 days. They may be removed after 10 PM Friday evening or before 8 AM Saturday morning.

6. Prizes will awarded as follows:

A. Grand and Reserve Champion trophies will be awarded to participants from throughout the District in each grade level.

B. Ribbons will be awarded to all students participating.

C. Decision of the judges will be final.

7. Pumpkins should be no larger than the normal ones used for carving or display during Halloween.

8. The committee reserves the right to remove any pumpkin which, because of carving, etc. creates an odor, attracts flies, or is leaking. This distracts from the overall exhibit.

Section 4 – Milk

RULES

1. Sample bottles will be available from the committee and the Solanco High School Agriculture Department, Tuesday, September 11.

2. Exhibitors are to take samples from milk from entire herd on Wednesday, September 12. Get samples in the hands of committee no later than 8 AM.

3. Milk will be scored on sediment, bacteria, and somatic cell.

4. Competition is open to all milk producers in Southern Lancaster County. There will be two classes: FFA and 4-H members, see Department 10; and adult dairy farmers.

5. Prizes will be awarded on the Danish System consisting of blue ribbon and $5, red ribbon and $3, white ribbon and $1 in adult and youth classes. Decision of the judges will be final.
