Section A-3 – BEEF CATTLE COMMITTEE RULES 1. ELIGIBILITY – Any boy or girl who is a member in good standing of a chartered FFA Chapter and Who resides in and has raised his or her steer in Solanco School District or who is a member in good standing of the Lancaster County 4-H Beef Club and resides in Solanco or Octorara School District is eligible to compete in the show and participate in the sale. Exhibitors must have passed their 8th birthday but not have passed their 19th birthday by January 1 of the year of the fair. In the event the individual does not complete high school, he or she may not exhibit past their 18th birthday.2. REGISTRATION AND OWNERSHIP – Each member must have entire charge and care of his or her animal. All animals must be on feed by the owner by January 1.All animals will attend a mandatory registration meeting in February (date and time will be announced by committee) at which their animals will be weighed and tagged in preparation for the show.3. FITTING AND PREPARATION OF ANIMAL – The intention of the FFA or 4-H Steer project is to provide young people with an educational experience raising their steer. For this reason, only the exhibitor will be permitted to clip/fit his or her steer on the fairgrounds. If the exhibitor is under the age of 14 as of January 1 the year of the fair, he or she may have assistance from an immediate family member. Failure to abide by this rule will result in disqualification from the show and last placing in the sale order.4. HEALTH – A. In no case shall any animal be admitted that shows evidence of having a communicable disease. B. "All cattle for exhibition in Pennsylvania should be accompianed by a health certificate signed by an accredited veterinarian that includes a statement that the animal(s) identified have been immunized against IBR, P13, and BVD using at least 2 doses of killed vaccine, 2-4 weeks apart or one dose of MLV vaccine. The most recent vaccine must be administered not less than 15 days or more than 180 days before the show." Testing for tuberculosis to follow state guidelines. (Presently not required). C. Steers will have to have a tuberculosis test, conducted after April 1, for the show season. They must be identified with official cattle ear tags. An exhibition health certificate (AAI-13) will be issued by the Bureau of Animal Industry or, in lieu of official health certificate, the TB test report will be acceptable. D. NO ANIMALS WILL BE PERMITTED TO THE BARN WITHOUT PROPER HEALTH CERTIFICATION AT TIME OF ENTRY.5. All steers must be naturally polled or dehorned to a safe condition as determined by the chairpersons, preferably less than 3 inches. 6. All exhibitors must have a completed and signed “ Animal Owner or Caretakers Verification of Veterinarian -–Client – Patient Relationship” form that will be collected at check-in.7. ALL ANIMALS are to be entered on Tuesday evening from 3 – 5 PM, and remain on the grounds until 10 PM Friday. Steers will be weighed upon arrival. 8. All members will hold their annual sale of their steers on Friday evening. Members may sell a maximum of one (1) steer. 9. A preview class for steers going to the farm show will be provided if necessary. 10. All exhibitors will be expected to help with clean up on Saturday morning following the fair. Good Housekeeping Award 1. It is the sincere wish of the Solanco Fair Association to maintain livestock areas in a clean, neat, and safe condition for the enjoyment of Fair patrons, therefore a good housekeeping award has been initiated and will be awarded to the exhibitors best displaying these qualities. 2. The award will be based on the following point system:

Market Steer Fitting Contest The Steer fitting contest will be held on Thursday prior to the Market Beef Show. Interested exhibitors will register for the contest during steer weigh-ins. CONTEST RULES 1. Novice class for 1st year exhibitors of beef cattle. 2. Junior class for exhibitors under the age of 14 as of January 1 this year. 3. Senior class for exhibitors at or over the age of 14 as of January 1 this year. 4. The contest will be held in an area exclusive of all other events. 5. Only contestants and judge(s) will be permitted in the fitting area. 6. Each exhibitor will clip, style and otherwise fit their own steer in preparation for the market beef competition later that evening. 7. Each exhibitor will work solely on their own animal. No assistance from other parties will be permitted. Exhibitors may share materials amongst themselves if mutually agreeable.
